Below our Support Worker, Julie, shares how learning to practice gratitude each day has helped her, and how you can give it a go yourself.

One of the most AMAZING tools we use on the HOPE course is GRATITUDE. When people first walk through the doors they may feel that they have very little to be grateful for. That feeling doesn’t last for long!! By practicing gratitude, even the darkest day can be turned into a day full of sunshine.

On the course, people are encouraged to write a gratitude list/diary everyday. I always do mine at night before I go to sleep. However if I’m feeling a little negative it is more important than ever to sit back, pen in hand and write down things I have in my life today to be grateful for.

An example of one may be –

I am GRATEFUL for

My family

My home

My cat Willow

My work at Volunteering in Health

My friends

Living in such a beautiful place

Being able to walk by the sea early in the morning

By the time I have completed that I have no reason to feel down.

During session one of the HOPE course we show people how to write their list and by the end of each session people write at least 3 things they have to feel grateful for and they each put them up on a gratitude wall which is hung up. At the end of the six sessions it is a mass of coloured ‘post it notes’ and the room is full of laughter and smiling faces.

People who regularly practice gratitude report:

Fewer health complaints

Feel more attentive, energetic and determined. Are more satisfied with life and more optimistic.

Are more likely to build relationships with others.

Are able to cope better with adversity.

WHY NOT GIVE IT A TRY, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT SO MUCH TO GAIN
